Of the twenty dollar coins minted in the United States, we are buying the following:

Below you will find information about some details of grading U.S. double eaglesxx
which can help you in determining the value of your coins. These descriptions of grades use official American Numismatic Association (ANA) terminology, both in general descriptions of grades, and also coin-specific grading terminology on these coin grading pages.* Examples of coins in various grading conditions are shown, graded by various professional grading services companies, as indicated by their abbreviations. EF-45, Light wear detectable on high points of Liberty gold coin design.   Obverse:   All letters of LIBERTY on coronet complete, although slight weakness or wear on last three letters may show. Light wear on Liberty's hair and cheek below the coronet, above her ear and curls below her ear, and on prongs of coronet. Contact marks in field and some wear shows on stars.   Reverse:   Some Mint luster present. Eagle's wing feathers show detail. Light wear across the eagle, scroll and shield.

 

AU-50, On the obverse, wear detectable on Liberty's breasts, nose and left knee. Wear apparent also in the fields. On the reverse, wear noticeable on the eagle's breast, upper wing feathers and lower body. Half of the original St.-Gaudens mint luster is present. Friction present in fields on both obverse and reverse, except in protected areas. Deep / long contact marks may drop count from the AU grade range.

 

 

AU-53, Light wear on Liberty gold coin design high points.   OBV:   All letters of LIBERTY are strong. Noticeable contact marks and wear in fields. Slight wear on Liberty's cheek, eyebrow, on hair on forehead below and upon the coronet.   REV:   Slight wear on eagle's body, shield and scroll. ½ of mint luster present.

 

AU-55, Small traces of wear visible on highest points of the Saint-Gaudens gold coin. On the obverse, (shown) wear visible on Liberty's left knee, left breast, nose and forehead.   REV:   Three-quarters of original Mint luster is present. Trace of wear obvious on eagle's wing feathers. Slight friction evident in the fields.

 

 

AU-55, Slightest trace of wear present on highest design points.   OBV:   Trace of wear visible on Liberty's hair and cheek.   REV:   Three-fourths of mint luster present. Trace of wear visible on eagle's wing tips, tail feathers and neck, and scroll high points.

 

AU-58, Smallest trace of wear detectable on Liberty's knee and left breast.   REV:   More than three-fourths of original mint luster present. Barely visible wear on eagle's upper wing, breast and body.

AU-58, Some signs of wear detectable on highest design points of the liberty gold coin.   OBV:   shown.  Abrasions detectable on Liberty's coronet and hair.   REV:   Slight abrasions detectable on eagle's wing tips, neck, and top of shield.

 

MS-60, Strictly uncirculated St.-Gaudens 20 dollar coin; no trace of wear. Eye appeal is generally poor. May have heavy contact marks in all areas. May have noticeable patch or continuous hairline scratches on both sides. Luster may be impaired or original.

 

 

MS-60, uncirculated Liberty 20 dollar coin; no trace of wear permitted. Mint luster may be unattractive, washed out or dull. Eye appeal is very poor. May have large bag marks or damage spots in all areas; rim nicks may be present. May have a patch of or continuous hairline scratches on surfaces.

 

MS-61, uncirculated, no trace of wear. Luster may be impaired or original; coin is generally unattractive. May have some heavy or many light bag marks in both the prime and secondary focal areas on both sides. May have apparent hairline scratches on both sides of the St.-Gaudens double eagle.

 

 

MS-61, uncirculated. Mint luster may be noticeably diminished or impaired. Surface quality may be poor and overall eye appeal is somewhat unattractive. Hairline scratches may be very noticeable. Clusters of large and small contact marks visible on surface of coin. Scuff marks may be present on major design elements. Small rim nicks and striking or planchet defects may show.

 

MS-62, uncirculated, no trace of wear. Luster may be impaired or original. May have a few distracting contact marks in prime and secondary focal areas. May have a few scattered or patches of hairline scratches. Has generally acceptable eye appeal.

MS-62, uncirculated. Mint luster may be dull or impaired Eye appeal overall is generally acceptable.. Clusters of small marks may be present on surfaces and a few large nicks or marks are permitted in the prime focal areas. Hairline scratches are generally very noticeable; large scuff marks may be present on major design elements. Strike, planchet quality and rim may be noticeably below average.

 

MS-63, uncirculated, with no trace of wear. May have a few distracting bag marks in prime focal area. May have a small patch of or a few scattered hairline scratches. Coin is generally attractive. Luster may be sightly impaired or original.

 

 

MS-63, uncirculated coronet 20 dollar liberty gold coin. Slight detectable impairment of mint luster. Small hairline scratches visible without magnification. A few scattered heavy marks and numerous small contact marks permitted. Several detracting defects or scuff marks may be present. General quality of the coin is about average. Overall, the coin is rather attractive.

 

MS-64, uncirculated Saint-Gaudens double eagle, shown, no trace of wear. Coin has pleasing eye appeal. May have a few light, scattered contact marks with some in prime focal areas. May have a few hairline scratches in secondary focal areas. Luster should be average, full original.

 

 

MS-64, uncirculated. Mint luster and strike are average. Displays attractive quality, and eye appeal is pleasing. Several groups of small contact marks permitted as well as 1-2 moderately heavy marks. 1-2 small patches of hairline scratches may be visible under low magnification. Light defects or scuff marks may be detectable.

 

MS-65, no trace of wear, uncirculated. Luster is fully original. May have light, scattered contact marks but none in the prime focal areas. May have a few, light and scattered hairline scratches. Coin has very pleasing eye appeal overall.

MS-65, uncirculated. Mint luster and strike are of high quality and attractive. Quality overall is above average, and overall eye appeal is very pleasing. A few small and scattered contact marks or two larger marks permitted. 1-2 small patches of hairline scratches visible under magnification. Light scuff marks may be detectable on design high points.

 

 

 

 

MS-66, uncirculated Liberty twenty dollar gold coin, shown.  Quality of strike is above average. Full, original mint luster must be present. No more than 2-3 noticeable minor contact marks permitted. A few very light hairline scratches may show under magnification or one or two light scuff marks allowed on major design elements or fields. Eye appeal must be very pleasing.
