Minnesota Coin Dealer

There are thousands of people around the world who are interested in collecting coins.  The most popular coins include those that were only in circulation for a brief period, or those that are considered rare because they were only minted for a short period of time, coins that were minted with some kind of error, and also foreign coins.  Hoarding coins because of their value goes back to the days when coins were first being made.  Collecting coins as pieces of art and history developed much later.  In fact, it has grown to the point where some collectors are willing to pay an exorbitant amount of money for the coins they are looking for.  There is a coin dealer in Minnesota that represents a group of collectors, and will buy all kinds of old and rare coins.

Coin collecting is often referred to as the ‘hobby of Kings.’  It is thought that modern coin collecting began in the 14th century with the Italian poet and scholar, Petrarch.  There is some evidence of Roman emperors having coin collections, but it is unclear whether these coins were studied, considered curiosities, or simply hoarded for their value.  The first international convention for coin collectors was held in Detroit, Michigan in August 1962, and was sponsored by both the American and the Canadian Numismatic Associations.  There were some 40,000 collectors who attended.  The hobby has grown from strength to strength in the modern age, with collectors now employing agents like Mid West, a coin dealer in Minnesota to source coins.

Coin collectors begin their passion in various ways.  They may have saved a coin they received in circulation but found interesting, or kept coins from an international trip.  Often, if their interests increase, simply chancing upon a coin will not be sufficient to satisfy their demand for new specimens and a potentially expensive hobby is born.  Some become generalists and this can result in an incredible collection, such as that of King Farouk of Egypt, who collected all kinds of things, as well as coins.  Louis Eliasberg is currently the only collector who has been able to assemble a complete set of known coins of the United States.  There are many other collectors interested in collecting American coins, and a coin dealer in Minnesota is willing to buy them from you to add to their collections

Collectors have created systems to describe the overall condition of coins, which helps them to determine whether the coins are indeed valuable or not.  The Sheldon system uses a 1-70 numbering scale, where 70 represents a perfect specimen and 1 represents a barely identifiable coin.  This system is used primarily in the U.S. and has been adopted by the American Numismatic Association.  If you think that you are in possession of an old or rare American coin, please do not hesitate to contact Mid West, a Minnesota coin dealer.  The coin appraisal is free and can be done over the phone toll free at 888-380-MINT (6468) or via email with a description of your coins.  The collectors are interested in rare U.S. coins, old coins such as the colonial and U.S. civil war coins, gold or silver coins, as well as proof sets, commemoratives, and mint sets.  With the exception of some older Canadian coins, foreign coins are generally not popular.  Visit www.midwestmint.com for more information.
